Hiding in Broad Daylight: How to Deter Scooter Thieves

True or false: “this morning could not get any worse.”

False. FALSE! So very false, could not be more false.

Picture this, you’re running late for something important, you walk out the front door and discover your bike (analog or otherwise) is precisely nowhere to be found…

Is theft that big of deal?

    Bike theft is everywhere.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated 40,000 motorbikes were stolen in 2016 in the UK alone, which statistically means that your motorbike is at a 3.3% risk of danger each night it is parked randomly.

Bike theft is cited as the most common crime in Amsterdam, and in London it’s responsible for 40% of the UK’s overall amount of vehicle theft. Even if you didn’t accidentally leave your keys in the ignition and instead successfully ‘secured’ the steering lock, your bike is still at risk.

Available deterrents to this problem include unpickable locks (the birthplace of angle saws/grinders), alarm systems (but if you’re around the corner at the pub and the bass is pumping, well…), and covers (like wrapping paper for your bike).

But you have to imagine that the thief has the resources to demolish all your security precautions, so the best way to ensure bike security is to make your ride less appealing and less venerable than the one next to it. There are few ways you can accomplish this.

    Scooter theft solutions.

Locks and chains – Since the front wheel of a scooter can be removed, and a steering lock can be broken; you have to secure the back wheel of the scooter with a lock so it can’t be wheeled away. Get into the habit of attaching your scooter to a grounding point or immovable object, as this makes it more difficult for thieves to angle-saw the daylights out of it. Securing your front brake disc and using a D-lock on the front wheel is the most effective approach here.

Covers – When thieves are unable to immediately identify the make and model of your scooter, it deters them from immediate action and offers another hurdle. “Out of sight, out of mind.”

Data has shown that this “sweater-for-your-bike” approach is the strongest deterrent; because well, anything could be under there! If anything, it keeps the thieves guessing, and these moments of uncertainty could be the deciding factors for the fate of your vehicle.

    Being proactive.
